Fresh Young Coconuts Vs. Sports Drinks or Water?

*UPDATE 10/01/11- Nudie have started selling a bottled version of Coconut water, it’s a little more expensive but it’s very convenient!

Coconut water from green coconuts is pretty amazing stuff. It will save your life if no fresh or clean water is available as it offers clean, fresh and sterile water with a broad selection of essential minerals and nutrients. It contains potassium that is crucial for brain function, and army medics have been known to use them in place of bags of plasma for IV’s to save the lives of wounded soldiers in the field!

According to a 2002 study by the University of Malaysia*. Consumption of both coconut water or electrolyte/carbohydrate sports drinks gave a higher restoration of blood plasma glucose post exercise than regular water. Of all three post exercise drinks – blood volume was restored to the highest level with coconut water although it was only slightly higher than the other two. Finally, coconut water had the least negative effects such as nausea, fullness or stomach upset when consumed at higher quantities than the sports drink or water.

So what does this mean? Next time you finish a workout, why not reach for a young coconut! Most supermarkets carry them for around $2.50 and they taste great straight out of the fridge. They are 100% natural and contain no nasty chemicals, they restore your body post workout better than sports drinks and water and create no plastic rubbish.
